After leaving Virginia, Chris drove South and then West across the flat planes, through New Mexico and Arizona, and arrived at the Pacific Coast. Mojave Desert- Near the end of Chris's trip, he got lost in the Mojave Desert and almost succumbed to dehydration. El Sugunda, California- When Chris arrived in California, he visited El Segunda neighborhood where he spent the first 6 years of his life. He called on a number of friends who still lived there and he then pieced together his father's previous marriage. This happened on one of his cross country wanderings. Fairbanks, Alaska (1989)- instead of going to Guatemala, Chris went to Fairbanks. Chris sent his parents a postcard towards the end of the summer saying he was leaving Fairbanks and that he would see them in a couple weeks.
